Prague Shakuhachi Festival offers a wide selection of masterclasses and beginner courses on various Japanese traditional instruments. We think that regardless of the student’s level the best way to learn is from a true master. This is why not only the masterclasses but also the so-called “hands on” courses for absolute beginners are led by top performers and the festival’s main guests.

For over seven years we are trying to perfect the course structure. Every year we try to optimise teaching periods, number pieces being taught and also introduce our students to related musical topics through workshops and lectures. 2013 is the first year that PSF also offers a masterclass outside of the millieu of Japanese traditional instruments. Special festival guest Pamelia Kurstin will lead a masterclass dedicated to theremin, the first electronic musical instrument. Learn more about her masterclass here.

The festival courses all start on the Saturday morning of August the 24th and continue all the way to the evening of the 27th when the festival ends with the students’ concert. All courses take place in luxurious and very suitable facilities of Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU). Every participant of any course offered by the PSF has a free entry to all the festival concerts and lectures.

Japanese singer Mika Kimula will lead a two-class workshop on voice in Japanese music open to all participants in PSF courses. This is a unique opportunity to learn about and experience one of the most important aspect of Japanese music.

Members of the PSF Friends program get 30% discount on any masterclass they wish to take. Also, they can invite one of their friends to take part in a “hands on” course for free.

SHAKUHACHI MASTERCLASS

Shakuhachi Masterclass is the festival’s most sought after teaching program. It is tailored to all shakuhachi players beyond the absolute beginner level.
